The Unemployment Insurance Act provides protection to workers who become unemployed. It prescribes claiming unemployment benefits for unemployment, maternity benefits, illness benefits, adoption benefits and dependents’ benefits.
In order to receive unemployment benefit, employees must register in an approved Danish unemployment fund (a so-called a-kasse) that operates within their professional area of work. There are 36 approved unemployment funds in Denmark, 34 of which are for wage earners and 2 of which are for manager owners.
As a member of an unemployment insurance fund (a-kasse / arbejdsløshedskasse), you have a right to higher benefits (dagpenge) should you be laid off. You can also take a leave of absence from your job in order to look after your children, should you decide to do so.
